So, have you guys seen this movie? One of the best big “Blockbuster” movies ever made. It has FANTASTIC everything. Cast: Bruce Willis, Liv Tyler, Ben Affleck, Billy Bob Thornton, and an unbelievable supporting cast. (I don’t think Hollywood could afford to put this cast together again) FANTASTIC special effects. FANTASTIC director. FANTASTIC story line. As far as this “type” of movie goes it’s up there with Independence Day and Deep Impact. Everything about this film is BIG! It really is an amazing film to watch. I’ve seen it three times and every now and then, as I’m flipping through the movie channels, i’ll stop and watch a few minutes…..because it’s so BIG! It’s fun to watch this kind of film every once in a while.
When the movie opens it’s revealed that an asteroid is headed directly toward Earth. The President, while talking to NASA asks why we haven’t sited this sooner. Billy Bob Thornton answers, ” Well the budget for tracking the sky is about 1 million dollars. That allows us to track about 3% of the sky, and frankly, Mr. President, it’s one “Big Ass Sky!” (lol) There are a lot fun moments in this film which makes it very difficult to walk out on. The script is that good. The acting is first rate……LIV TYLER is a dream to watch, I don’t care what she’s doing. And the shots on the Asteroid are stunning. The story is of a “Global Killer” (asteroid) that’s roughly the size of Texas, heading directly toward earth and is determined to be arriving in 18 days. The only way to stop it is, to drill a hole in it, plant a nuclear bomb in the hole, and blow it up from the inside. When the president asks what the damage will be, the response is, “Damage? Well, it’s what we call a Global Killer. TOTAL DAMAGE. The end of mankind. Nothing survives. Not even bacteria…”
The word Armageddon comes from the Greek, “har-Meggido” (or mount Meggido) that sits amid a great valley where, historically, the nations of the world have gathered their armies together, throughout the centuries as a “staging area” before battles. Armageddon, the “Valley of Decision”. The site of gathering of the armies, for a battle during the “end times”. The place where the final battle will be fought between the forces of good and evil. It is the name of the time when God will destroy wicked people. After Armageddon everyone that survives will live in “Peace on Earth”. The term is also used in a generic sense to refer to any “End of the World” Scenario.
“ARMAGEDDON” is used only once in the bible, in Revelation chapter 16, verse 16 in that verse, we’re told that Armageddon is a place, “The” place where Satan the “Beast” (whom modern man refers to as “The Anti-Christ) the “False Prophet” or The Beasts miracle-working, worship-approving, religious connection to the world’s adoring population,…..will influence all the Nations of the world, to gathering their armies together to attempt to fight and repel the returning JESUS CHRIST!
This whole story from Revelations has created all kinds of movies, poems, books, cults, and religious fervor for a long, long, time. I’m not sure, but I am sure you Bible study individuals will know better than I, it seems that it was written for a much earlier time. But I’m no expert on the bible. So if you know this story please leave some clarification in the “comments” section of this blog. What’s really interesting to me is the fact that this word is only mentioned ONCE in the entire Bible. Says something pretty magnificent about the Bible. The idea that the Bible is the single most powerful book ever written is never demonstrated more clearly than it is here. One word. And all that inspiration follows. I don’t know about you, but I think there may be something to this “BIBLE” thing. Perhaps i’ll give it a look-see. (lol) In the meantime, if you’ve got a couple of hours on your hand, and some popcorn nearby, ARMAGEDDON will not disappoint!..I am Dartanion2,………and that’s the way I see it !…………….enjoy…………t xx
Yes T` I`ve seen that film many times as it is one of the films on my favourites list. Independence Day, Armageddon and Deep Inpact in that precise order. I love films like that, anything to do with Space, I love the Star Trek films also. Have you seen the Star Trek film where they show Spock as a young man? I can`t remember the actor who played the young Spock or the title but it was really well done and he is a superb actor. My favourite Star Treck series is the Next Generation with Patric Stewart, I absolutely adore him, he is such a versatile actor and plays Pickard beautifully.
Talking about the subject of Armageddon, I wonder what our governments have really got tucked up their sleeves for situations such as that!!! Why are they all so secretive about these things, surely people would feel so much safer knowing that the governments have plans in place for this sort of disaster. If they kept the public informed properly about these things there wouldn`t be as much panic as they predict.
When I was a child my mum and dad took me to see the film The Ten Commandments way back in 1968 and afterwards we were discussing the story, she told me that they reckon the world will end through fire! So that film Armageddon makes sense in a way doesn`t it?
I have watched many science programmes about how they watch the skies for asteroids and comets and so on, it`s fascinating and I know what you mean about the sheer scale of the task, but I`m sure if they dedicated the taxpayers money to our safety and exploration rather than other peoples wars then we would stand a much better chance of dealing with these problems when they happen!!
I love you

Hey I’m with you G, I am huge fan of all things Sci-fi, my brother and I never missed “Next Generation”….love Dr. Who…..Stood in line for hours on the opening of “Star Wars”
(1977? I think) ..and of course the Masterpiece…2001: A Space Oddysey (top ten movies of all time) I can’t say enough about that film. I have a few friends at the Pentagon and I am assured that the US and several other countries have stratagies in place to handle any Near Earth Object Collision possibilities. They know of potentialities months in advance. We currently have 120 satellites orbiting our planet and tracking our skies is a priority. After all, we are somewhat selfish when it comes to Death, doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor. But when it comes to sci-fi films I don’t only appreciate the big blockbuster films there are a number of low budget films that are equally impressive. Overall, I’d say we are in good hands when it comes to the extreme in movies or reality. (lol)……..cheers my friend….ttyl…..t xx
Do you remember John Pertwee in Dr. Who? He was my favourite one back in the late sixties and early seventies when I was a about thirteen. I remember being nervous when I first saw the Darlek`s in it, but the Dr made me feel safe lol! The whole series is on the telly again now right from the begining. You must send me your list of favourite movies so I can see how many we both like. Do you like all the classic black and white sci fi films and any of the horror films, remember The Birds by Alfred Hichcock and Psycho they were superb films. When I watched The Birds when I was about the same age I remember having nightmares about them.
If a huge asteroid was seen would they be able to see if it was on a direct tragectory to earth and would they be able to land a nuclear bomb on it, would they have to do it the same as they did on the film Armageddon? I wonder if they are actually building any ships that would be able to do that. It makes sense to do that doesn`t it, to be ready in advance for an event like that. Would a nuclear bomb that has to be used affect the earth or would it`s radiation not get back to us? I suppose that would depend on how close it got wouldn`t it. I certainly hope they are preparing for that sort of event. See I told you my minds full of daft questions! isn`t it?
Love G xx
I agree with your assessment Tony,
this was indeed an amazing film both
for the Star Studded Cast, Dialogue,
AND the powerful message of Sacrifice,
and the perseverance of The Human
Spirit.
It was sincerely a Triumph, and I
like to think that there are still Heroes
In The World who (if ever they were
met with similar circumstances)
would do The Same Thing.
Tony, you did a great job explaining Armageddon and its literal meaning and the spiritual context of general end time scenarios. I appreciated your reference to the Bible and the impact that it has on all who take the time to open it and read its prolific messages of truth and story of love and completion in God’s time to reconcile us all once and for all in a beautiful peaceful world. It is the hope and promise I cling to. God bless you, dear friend. 🙂 C
