So, have you guys seen the movie “POWDER” ? If you have, then you knew that I’d be getting to this film eventually. This film is all about the very things this blog concerns itself with. Namely, ENERGY! The picture above will give you an idea. The movie, is tailor made for this blog. A woman is pregnant as she walks down the street one evening, and she is suddenly struck by lightening. The woman dies, but not before they save the child, who is born premature. The father cannot handle the situation so the child is raised by his Grandparents, on a farm. The child grows up never seeing television or meeting anyone from the outside world. The Grandparents keep him hidden when other people around (for the most part) but he does go outside each day to do his work on the farm. He is Albino white and completely devoid of hair. Hair will not grow on his body. So he is very unusual to look at. The lightening strike has caused in him, unusual amounts of energy to emanate from his body, making it impossible for him to be near anything electrical without disturbing the working parts of the machine. So, the TV won’t work when he’s around, the radio, the blender and so on.
So he spends all of his time in the basement reading books, which are his only means of understanding the world around him. Literally thousands of books are in his basement. He has developed his abilities to entertain his grandparents, hoping to receive love and affection from them. He learns to manipulate the extreme levels of energy emanating from his body. He can read your mind, or hear your thoughts. He can move objects that are made of metal. He can, literally, make the hair on your head stand up with static electricity. Then his grandparents die, and the social workers come, to take him away, the farm is in foreclosure, he becomes a ward of the state. Needless to say, everyone is shocked at his appearance, it’s a small town and word gets around that they’ve found some freak of nature living in the basement. His foray out into the world of people is where 90% of this movie takes place. The film questions the limits of the human mind and body, while also displaying society’s capacity for cruelty, and raises hopes that humanity will advance to a state of better understanding and promotion of metaphysical capability.
Now, before we go any further, there is something else you should know about this film. There is a huge backstory to the making of this film by Disney. The writer and director of this film, Victor Salva, is a convicted child molester. So before this movie ever got made their were people picketing at Disney, and parents wouldn’t let there children see it, and all the things you can imagine were swarming around this film. Basically, people were already standing in line to crucify this guy. Now I’m writing about this movie because of the movie itself, not about child molestation or anything of the sort. In fact, I think the critics and the movie goers alike, already had in their minds made up to “NOT LIKE” this movie. The truth of the matter is, something beautiful came out of this man, that every one hated, for good reasons. But that , to my mind, is prejudiced. If I hadn’t told you that piece of information, you would have never guessed, in a million years, that this film came out of this man. But I wanted you to know because I have something to say to Caryn James of The New York Times (at the time) who called it “lethally dull” and said, “This intensely self-important film has no idea how absurd and unconvincing it is!” Well, Caryn James obviously saw a different movie, or she simply has no understanding of Physics and Evolution then, she may have actually gotten something out of a film that will be so important, in the years to come, that her quotes in NY Times will become laughable. BIG MOUTH!! There, I got that off of my chest.
The star of this movie,(made in 1995) Sean Patrick Flanery, gives a stellar performance as “Powder”. Jeff Goldblum is perfectly cast as the high school Physics teacher. And Mary Steenburgen is her wonderful self as the one woman that Powder can count on. Powder is portrayed as having such a beautiful, uncorrupted, soul that the film is mesmerizing to watch, If you don’t believe in ESP or Telepathy this may be a stretch for you. But if you do, you will LOVE this movie. My blog concerns itself with Energy and mans ability to learn to manipulate that energy to the benefit of all mankind. This movie will give you potential answers, and one possible direction that evolution may, or may not, take us in, Regardless, it’s a fascinating look at one of the possibilities. For those of us who believe in the potential for humans to manifest metaphysical capabilities, this is a MUST SEE movie. Much in the vain of “LUCY” which comes out soon I’m told. I walked away from this movie feeling good that I was not the only person in the world expressing themselves where this subject matter was concerned. The critics destroyed this movie. And I hope one day that those critics that did, find themselves one day, on a crowded elevator, with a sudden onset of diarrhea, and the elevator gets stuck between floors……… I am Dartanion2………..and that’s the way I see it…………cheers……..t xx
Gosh!! that sounds like a great film T`, ok I abhor the subject of molestation of any kind, but that`s another subject!! In my opinion that has nothing to do with the fact that the film sounds like a great story. I haven`t seen this film but certainly would like to. It sounds like an appalling childhood and at the same time you can understand the grandparents reluctance to allow people to interact with the child. It even shows how cruel the world is to people who are different, which is terrible, and much worse because it is also very real and people are suffering every day just because they don`t `fit in with the beautiful people` Personally it`s `the beautiful people` that I feel sorry for as their narrow twisted self opinionated minds must be a permanent migrain!! This is a great piece to read T` well done honey.
Love G xx
Hey Georgie, I think of all people I know….you would really love this movie, because of your personal experiences and beliefs, I’m sure you would……and you better come back and tell us all what you thought…I’m looking forward to it. You’re right about the cruelty part……..it helps drive the film forward though ……..but,,yes….it’s s sad state of affairs when people are mistreated just for being different….I know what I’m talking about on that subject……..always a pleasure G……..ttyl……T xx
Hi T. I want to see this movie. I am so behind in seeing ones I know will fascinate me. I feel so much compassion for the dear soul Powder was,…his intelligence and tender heart despite how society treats him and misunderstands his beauty and gifts. With less drastic portrayals, in real life there are many ‘beautiful’ people that are looked at as freaks or devalued by not being understood. I personally am drawn to people who are special for being different. The hearts of dear souls is spiritual and takes a discerning mind to grasp and appreciate. But Oh! How incredibly touching they are in a world of mundane apathetic attitudes. A blessing.
This movie is perfect for your review on this blog. It tells another separate story outside the movie itself….of how people want to condemn and persecute sinners and refuse to see any good in them….judging and not seeing how God can use anyone for His glory. This movie is an example. The director was condemned for being a child molester….and yes, that is disturbing….but the movie is not promoting this behavior or notion. It has a very moral and moving message of love and compassion…misunderstandings due to closed, shallow minds.
Excellent blog, T. 🙂
i remember this movie from my childhood..it was amazing.
The ending is especially interesting and ties into your
belief of all things being energy at it’s core.
I like how he disburses into the lightning and becomes
Everything.
Hey Jeremy, so glad to hear from you bro, I’m glad you remember that ending……it is kind of interesting isn’t it?…you’re right it is right up my alley……..ttyl……t xx
Holy Toledo! I thought I’d seen a lot of movies, but this is another one I haven’t seen and now want to see. You’re the ‘real’ movie man, Tony. Agree with you with the critics, they can be trolls. This movie sounds like a cross between ‘Starman’ and ‘Being there’ and ‘Lawnmower man’ a bit. I enjoy watching fantasy movies with a good message. Your write was well done, lol I’m still a little shocked with your treatment of the critics, lol there are actually people that Tony don’t like? lol no sympathy coming from me for them though, ‘you live by the sword…’ lol, great blog
Hey Curtis, I am still laughing at your crack about finding some people I “Don’t” like LOL–sorry but that cracked me up (lol)……umm, yeah, I think you should C…..if you get the chance, it’s VERY good film….I think the metaphysical part may not be “exactly” up your alley……but the beautiful aspect ..Will……thanx C…….ttyl…..t xx
Reblogged this on Metaphysics and the Movies according to Dartanion2 and commented:

Well said Tony and you tell those critics. I seen powder when I was a boy so it’s been a long time but what I remember from the movie is that it was good and also sad somewhat of a tear jerker being bullied when powder was he nicest person around all because he looked different, and his abilities made the movie interesting. Man since you brought i up i want to see it now.
